Su Zhi, the Chief of NHFPC Department of Food Safety Standard, Monitoring and Evaluation revealed in the press release held by the State Council Information Office of PRC on Jan. 16 that in 2014, about 50% of the food safety standards will be integrated. In addition, the NHFPC is actively striving to establish the national food safety standard center.
Previously, there are totally over 7000 national, industrial and local standards for food, food additives and food products. In 2012, the Twelfth Five-years plan for Food Industry Development jointly released by eight ministries and commissions including the former Ministry of Health proposed that under the basis of standard settlement, the standard integration will be finished by the end of 2014 to solve the crossover, repeat and contradiction of standards.
The data published by the NHFPC show that after over one year’ settlement, there are totally 4934 existing food standards, among which 2458 standards will not be integrated, 1492 standards are suggested for integration, and 1061 standards are planned to integrate, regulate and revise.
Su said that the next step is to integrate the settled standards systematically. According to the requirements of the task, the integration shall be finished during the twelfth five-year plan. Therefore, about 50% standards shall be integrated in 2014. The work will be further completed on that basis, and the national food safety standard system in China shall be established in 2015.
For the national food safety standard center to be established, Su said that the center is expected to undertake the technically leading role fir the food safety work. It will be allocated with more professional talents, and adopts council management. The relevant departments including the Ministry of Agriculture and AQSIQ will be he member of the council.
