The Strategic Transformation of China's Food and Nutrition Development

The State Council General Office has issued the 'National Food and Nutrition Development Program (2014-2020)', which is a big deal to improve the nation's health level. The publication of the Program points out the direction for China's food and nutrition development and provides important support for the great goal of the fully building of the well-off society in 2020. The “Program' puts forward five major goals which will be achieved in 2020, including the national grain output, the development of food industry, the food consumption, the nutrient intake and the control of nutritional disease and other goals. In condition of the decrease in cultivated land, rising resources and environmental constraints and intensified climate impact in China, the task of ensuring food safety and promoting the nutrition improvement is very difficult.

1. The work of strengthening the food and nutrition development is imperative.
(1) The food production does not fit to nutrition needs.
(2) Facing the dual challenges of deficiency and excess of nutrition.
(3) The problem of food quality and safety has attracted a lot of attention.
(4) Poor eating habits effects health.

2. The development of food and nutrition needs four strategic changes.

(1) Production determining consumption and consumption determining nutrition will be changed to nutrition determining consumption and consumption determining production.

(2) Being well fed and eating well will be changed to being well fed, eating well and eating scientifically.

(3) The transition from traditional agricultural products to high-end production of agricultural products.

(4) The selling of primary agricultural products will be changed to processed food.

3. Countermeasures and suggestions to Food and Nutrition Development in China.

(1) Put the food safety and nutrition improvement into the important schedule of local governments at all levels.
(2) Relying on science and technology, put forth effort to improve the comprehensive development capacity of agriculture and food processing industry.
(3) Speed up the construction of dietary nutrition improvement system to improve the health level of residents.
(4) Accelerate the popularization of scientific knowledge of food and nutrition.
