Zhang Jing, the Director of Division of Supervision II of China Food and Drug Administration, said that the Food Safety Commission Office of the State Council, the Food and Drug Administration, and the State Administration for Industry and Commerce jointly conducted special operations to regulate the rural food market in August, 2014. More than 1300 sites of producing and selling fake and poor quality food were demolished until now.
However, Zhang Jing also indicated that the food industry in rural area was overall undeveloped, and the current situation of food safety was not optimistic, and particularly some new rising commercial activities cause potential hazards for rural food market. According to Zhang Jing, those hazards included: the lack of supervision on some commercial form like mobile stalls, the lack of specific regulations to the online food market, and the lack of the supervision awareness and responsibility implementation for rural food market.
Zhang Jing said, in the future, relevant competent authorities would reinforce the investigation of rural food safety hazards; more efforts would be taken to improve the food safety awareness of consumers; more practical supervision measures would be taken to fit local custom; and moreover, a complete responsibility retroacting system would be established.
