The “historically most severe” new Food Safety Law has taken effect since October 1, and the regulation of genetically modified labelling has caused wide public concern. The provisions of Article 69 of the Food Safety Law specify that, “the genetically modified product for production and operation shall be obviously labeled as specified”, “for the consumer’s free choice”, “if the product is not labeled as specified, the penalty of 5-10 times of the product value can be imposed maximally; if the circumstances are serious, the manufacturer can be ordered to suspend production or revoke the business license”.
