Speaking of the walnut industry in China, Shangluo is an inextricable place. In the 1970s, Shangluo’s annual output of walnut ranked first throughout the country, accounting for one-third of the country’s exports. On April 10 this year, the 14th meeting of the Standing Committee of the 4th Shangluo Municipal People’s Congress designated the walnut tree as the city tree of Shangluo, which shows Shangluo people’s affection for walnut and the importance of the walnut industry to Shangluo.

However, the development of Shangluo’s traditional walnut industry has also met with the bottleneck of “not obvious characteristics, low output, poor benefits and low enthusiasm of the masses for planting”. Now, there is a new breakthrough to solve these problems.

On the 15th day, Dong Zhaobin, head of Shengxin Red Kernel Walnut Professional Cooperative in Luonan County, brought out a plate of red kernel walnuts he imported and produced from the United States. “You see, the red kernel walnuts are good in color and shape, and contain significantly higher anthocyanin and ellagic acid components than other varieties, and their nutritional value is several times that of traditional walnuts. The gross income per mu of traditional walnuts is approximately 2,000 yuan, while the gross income per mu of red kernel walnuts may reach 20,000 yuan, which is approximately 10 times the benefit of traditional walnuts.”
