Tackling the walnut “neck” bottleneck Xinjiang launches key research and development specialties

This reporter learned from the autonomous region of forestry and grassland bureau was informed that: Xinjiang will spend three years, attack walnut industry “neck” bottleneck, and further enhance the level of walnut industrialization.
Recently, the autonomous region's key research and development tasks special “Xinjiang walnut germplasm innovation and production of key equipment research, development and application of” project start-up and implementation of the program review will be held. The project is undertaken by the Xinjiang Academy of Forestry Sciences, the R & D team brought together the Xinjiang Academy of Forestry Sciences, Xinjiang University, China Academy of Forestry Research Institute of Forestry, Tarim University, Beijing Yugen Science and Technology Co., Ltd. and other scientific research backbone, in order to the development of the walnut industry in Xinjiang, faced with the germplasm resources, irrigation and mechanization integration and other issues as a breakthrough point, to carry out the project implementation design. The project plans to spend three years to complete the Xinjiang walnut germplasm resource type background survey, crack walnut quality and high yield and stable production facing the low utilization of water resources, research and development of walnut tree pruning, walnut harvesting and shelling equipment, etc., to enhance the mechanization level of the entire walnut production.
Walnut is the main economic tree species of Xinjiang forest and fruit industry development, with important ecological, economic and social value. In recent years, the walnut industry in Xinjiang has flourished, with an annual output of more than 1 million tons of walnuts, ranking second in the country. In the main walnut-producing areas, more than 40% of farmers' annual income comes from walnuts, and the walnut industry has become a pillar industry for farmers to increase their income.
