The Harvest of Sunflower Seeds Was Progressing Slowly in Argentina, and the Expected Yield Remained Unchanged

According to the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange (BAGE), as of the week of February 22, the harvest progress of sunflower seeds in Argentina for the period of 2022/23 reached 24.5%, 1.0% higher than that of 23.5% a week ago. The average yield was 1.53 tons/hectare, higher than 1.52 tons/hectare a week ago.
According to the Exchange, 78% of crops were in the normal to good condition, higher than 75% a week ago.
The Exchange estimated that the cultivated area of sunflower seeds in Argentina would be 2 million hectares during the period of 2022/2023, 17.6% higher than that of 1.7 million hectares in the previous year. The yield of sunflower seeds was estimated to be 3.9 million tons, 14.7% higher than that of 3.4 million tons in 2021/22.
In the supply and demand report released on February 8, 2023, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) predicted that, the yield of sunflower seeds in Argentina would reach 4.4 million tons in 2022/23, lower than the forecast of 4.6 million tons last month, but 8.6% higher than 4.05 million tons last year.
