The International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC) released its Global Hazelnut Industry report during the Vancouver Conference, which shows that the total global production of shelled hazelnuts for the 2023/24 season is estimated at 1.128 million tons, with a total supply of 1.358 million tons and ending stocks of 151,000 tons; The total production of global hazelnut nuts is 526,000 tons, the total supply is 639,900 tons, and the ending stock is 74,000 tons. The total global production of shelled hazelnuts is expected to increase by 20% to 1.349 million tonnes in the 2024/25 season, bringing the total supply to 1.5 million tonnes. Global hazelnut kernel production will be 632,000 tons, with a total supply of 706,000 tons.
According to the INC data, with the exception of Chile and France, production in the major producing countries will show modest growth in the 2024/25 season, with Turkey and Italy showing the most significant growth. Turkey's production of shelled hazelnuts for the 2023/24 season is estimated at 650,000 tonnes and supply at 865,000 tonnes, and its production of shelled hazelnuts for the 2024/25 season is expected to increase by 21% to 785,000 tonnes. Italian shelled hazelnut production is expected to increase by up to 60% from 87,000 tonnes in the 2023/24 season to 139,000 tonnes. Growth in the third largest producer, the United States, is smaller, with shelled hazelnut production expected to increase only from 84,500 tonnes to 87,500 tonnes. China's production of shelled hazelnuts in the 2023/24 season is estimated at 60,000 tonnes and is expected to increase to 75,000 tonnes in the 2024/25 season, with supply also increasing from 62,800 tonnes to 77,000 tonnes.
China's imports of hazelnuts are mainly from Turkey and the United States, and the imports from Turkey are mainly hazelnut nuts, while the imports from the United States are mainly hazelnuts with shells. Chinese customs statistics show that in 2023, China imported 5,386 tons of hazelnuts with shell from the United States, worth 72.08 million yuan; 469 tons of shelled hazelnuts were imported from Turkey, valued at 24.48 million yuan.
