The U.S. Department of Agriculture's
National Agricultural Statistics Service (USDA-NASS) recently released its 2024
California almond production forecast, saying that 3 billion pounds (about 1.36
million tons) of almond will be harvested in 2024, 21% higher than last year's
2.47 billion pounds. Unit production is expected to be 2,170 pounds per acre,
up 380 pounds from 1,790 pounds per acre in 2023. The area under cultivation of
Binian trees is 1.38 million acres, the same as the estimated area in 2023.
"The growth of California sinian trees
in 2024 experienced some twists and turns, but weather was favorable for most
of the first half of the growing season, with early varieties beginning to
bloom in the second week of February," the report said. Several storms
brought rain, high winds and hail to some areas, but generally comfortable
temperatures and good weather helped pollination from late February to early
March. A significant increase in pollination time has been reported over last
year. Frost damage is minimal to no negative impact, and for the second year in
a row, the area no longer faces water shortages."
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's
National Bureau of Agricultural Statistics will release two yield forecasts for
the new season, based on a survey of 500 randomly selected padan growers
conducted April 19 through May 5. Another objective forecast, to be released on
July 10, will be based on actual barsana growth in about 1,000 orchards, using
more rigorous statistical methods to determine yields. If production at 3
billion pounds remains unchanged, it would be the second highest on record.
According to the industry status report
released by the California Almond Wood Association, the US Almond wood 2023/24
