In June, blueberry harvest season began in the United States. This year, US blueberry production continues to remain at the highest level in recent years, and the market is very well supplied.
According to the U.S. Highbush Blueberry Association (USHBC), U.S. blueberry production for the 2024 season will reach 704 million pounds, or about 319,000 tons. Regionally, production in North Carolina, California and Florida has decreased slightly, but increases in Georgia have so far offset the declines in those states.
Fresh blueberries from the United States will officially be exported to China from 2021, and these blueberries mainly come from the first and second largest blueberry producing states in the United States, Washington and Oregon. In particular, blueberry farms in Oregon have exported fresh blueberries to China for three consecutive years.
This year, Oregon blueberries are growing well, picking a few days earlier than usual, and the season will continue through September. The American Highbush Blueberry Association says more than 320 million pounds (145,000 tons) will be produced in Oregon and Washington this year, accounting for 45.5 percent of total U.S. blueberry production.
The United States has traditionally been a big consumer of blueberries, exporting only about 5 percent of total production each year. In recent years, the United States Highbush Blueberry Association (USHBC) has worked to promote U.S. blueberry exports, setting a goal of increasing exports to 10% by 2025. As an emerging blueberry consumer market, China's blueberry imports are increasing, and it has become one of the key export destinations of the U.S. blueberry industry.
In May, the American Highbush Blueberry Association (USHBC) received a $1.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Food and Agriculture's Regional Agricultural Promotion Program (RAPP) to expand export opportunities for U.S. blueberries. Every year from July to August is the US blueberry export season to China, the first batch of blueberries exported to China will arrive in China in July at the earliest, and meet with domestic consumers again.
