US agriculture counselor expects Bulgaria's corn production to be at lowest level in more than a decade

The U.S. Agriculture Counselor further lowered Bulgaria's corn production forecast based on the latest harvest data, according to a Counselor's report released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Overseas (USDA Overseas).

The report said that Bulgaria's corn production in 2024/25, at 1.7 million tons, would be the lowest since 2012 if confirmed. The reduction in production is due to the scorching heat and dry weather during the summer.

Pakistan's maize exports and domestic use will fall sharply in 2024/25 due to a shortage of domestic supplies and a poor quality maize crop.

Barley and wheat production revised upwards

Bulgaria's barley production estimate has been raised to 1.1 million tons, up from 797,000 tons the previous year and the highest level since 2004, based on the latest harvest data. Wheat production was also revised up slightly to 7 million tons based on final harvest data. The export season got off to a strong start on the back of higher production, much improved quality and strong export demand.

Meanwhile, feed/industrial uses of wheat and barley are expected to increase to compensate for the decline in corn consumption.
