California Almond December Shipment Report: Record Transactions, Rising Market Performance

Overall December shipments were 233 million pounds (105,700 tons), up 1.6 percent from 229 million pounds (103,900 tons) a year ago. Total shipments for the quarter to date were 1.145 billion pounds (519,400 tons), unchanged from total shipments in the same period last year.

Analysis of shipments by region
December shipments of California Almond to China: 35 containers of meat (53 containers last year) and 70 containers of shells (222 containers last year). So far this season (August-December), total shipments to China: 422 cabinets of meat (673 cabinets last year), 622 cabinets of shell (1,254 cabinets last year). Shipments are down significantly by 45%. So far this season (August-December), total shipments to Vietnam: 528 containers of meat (404 last year), 110 containers of shells (8.5 last year). The shipment volume has increased significantly by 48%. Shipments to India so far this season (August-December): 44 containers of meat (50 containers last year) and 4,925 containers of shells (6,230 containers last year). Shipments are 21% lower than last year. Since the beginning of the new season, five months (August-December), Chinese demand for California Almond has continued to plummet, and in combination with the data released by Australian Almond, Chinese buyers have been more active in re-exporting their purchases from other producers, such as Australia, or even from Vietnam. Because of this, Vietnam's demand for California Almond has continued to surge. The continued decline in China's imports of California Almond is due to Trump's policies affecting domestic buyers' demand for California Almond, in addition to rising prices.
