Argentina's sunflower seeds conditions slumped over the past week, with soil moisture reserves continuing to fall as they were impacted by a lack of rain and hot weather, the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange (BAGE) said.
The report said weather forecasts indicate a lack of significant rainfall in the near term, which is beginning to worry farmers, and if the current dry and hot weather doesn't improve, crop conditions could dramatically summer anon.
As of January 8, Argentina's sunflower seeds rating excellent proportion of 82%, down from 85% a week ago, 73% at the same time last year; rating general proportion of 15%, the same as a week ago, 23% at the same time last year. The proportion of poorly rated was 3%, down from zero a week ago and 4% a year ago.
The percentage of sunflower producing areas with adequate soil moisture was 58 percent, compared with 62 percent a week ago and 94 percent a year ago.
The exchange expects Argentina to plant 2 million hectares of sunflower seeds in 2024/25, up from 1.85 million hectares a year earlier. Sunflower seed production is estimated at 4.1 million tons, up 13.9% from 3.6 million tons the previous year.
