Vietnam's cashew exports reach $4.3 billion in 2024, says Vietnam Cashew Association. Vietnamese cashew nut processing enterprises are happy about the big win, but also feel weak in the case of losses caused by the unusual surge in the price of unshelled cashew nuts.
Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Cashew Association Bai Khanh Il said that African countries and cashew supply markets such as Côte d'Ivoire have introduced a policy of temporary suspension of exports of unshelled cashews, aiming to prioritize the cashew industry in their own countries. This is unprecedented in Vietnam's cashew import industry. In this case, the Vietnam Cashew Association has communicated with the Vietnamese Ambassador to Morocco and Côte d'Ivoire, suggesting that Côte d'Ivoire Cotton, Cashew Nut Committee and the Government of the country to introduce an open and transparent policy, so that Vietnamese enterprises buy and sell transactions are not passive. At the same time, Vietnamese cashew processing enterprises based on the policy to balance and coordinate trade activities. Up to now, the Vietnam Cashew Association has received information that the Ivorian government will no longer adopt the same protection policy toward 2024.
Africa and Côte d'Ivoire are the main sources of raw materials for Vietnamese cashew processing enterprises. Each year, Côte d'Ivoire supplies 500,000 tons of unshelled cashew nuts to Vietnam, and the country produces 1.2 million tons of cashew nuts. Viet Nam imports 1.8 million tons of unshelled cashew nuts from other African countries to serve processing and meet various export orders. Côte d'Ivoire is the largest supplier of unshelled cashew nuts to all countries. Therefore, any change in the country's approval policy affects the activities of Vietnamese enterprises.
Despite many difficulties in 2024, Mr. Bai Khanh Il said that Vietnam's export volume of processed cashew nuts is still large. This proves that markets around the world still trust and maintain trade relations. It is expected that in 2025, Vietnam's cashew exports can reach more than 4 billion dollars.
According to statistics from the General Department of Vietnam Customs, in 2024, Vietnam exported 730,000 tons of cashew nuts with an export value of $4.37 billion, an increase of 13.3% and 20.2% in export volume and value respectively. the average export price of Vietnam's cashew nuts in 2024 was $6,003 per ton, a year-on-year increase of 6.1%.
For 18 years, Vietnam has been the world's leading cashew nut exporter, but mainly cashew kernels are deep-processed by various processing factories. Bai Kyung Il commented that at present, Vietnam's deep-processed cashew products account for a relatively small share of total cashew kernel exports. Vietnamese cashew nut processing enterprises are in need of assistance to produce high-value products.
In addition to focusing on further processing, Vietnam's cashew industry is tending to utilize the domestic market to boost sales of cashew nuts, especially further processed cashew products. The domestic market is still a place for the cashew industry to develop. Bai Qingri said that to develop the domestic market, enhance development opportunities, cashew industry needs the concerted efforts of local governments, organizations, units, cashew nuts and domestic consumers closer to provide domestic consumers with more choices. If we can promote the combination of international and domestic markets, the cashew industry in Vietnam will have more opportunities for development in the next few years.
