2 new nut suppliers in Africa! Customs access to Gambian cashews, Malawian macadamia

Recently, the General Administration of Customs (GAC) issued 2 consecutive announcements to allow the import of Gambian cashew nuts and Malawi macadamia that meet the requirements.
The Gambia is located on the Atlantic coast of West Africa, and its cashew export value had reached a high of 72.53 million dollars in 2017 and 35.36 million dollars in 2023, mainly exported to India, Vietnam, Singapore, the United States and other countries. The Gambian cashew nuts allowed to be imported refer to shelled or shelled cashew nuts for human consumption made from cashew nuts grown in The Gambia and processed in The Gambia through drying, selection and other processing techniques.
Cashew nuts exported from The Gambia to China shall not carry African leafy tarsal sawyer, grain mottle codling moth, African assassin blind stink bug, oceanic rump mealybug, invasive fruit fly and cashew nut drying and branching disease; shall not carry live insects, insect eggs, soil, and shall not be mixed with impurities such as weed seeds, plant residues, metal foreign bodies and gravel, and so on. Raw material cultivation, production, processing, storage, transportation and export of cashew nuts from The Gambia to China shall comply with the relevant food safety and phytosanitary requirements of China and The Gambia, and shall not be contaminated by disease-causing microorganisms or toxic and harmful substances. For goods in which live insects are found, they shall be fumigated before export, and their fumigation treatment index shall be indicated on the phytosanitary certificate.
Malawi, a landlocked country located in southeastern Africa, is the third-largest exporter of macadamia nuts in Africa and the seventh-largest in the world after South Africa and Kenya.2022 Malawi exported macadamia nuts valued at $21.6 million, or 3.1 percent of the country's total exports. Malawi macadamia nuts allowed to be imported refer to shelled or de-shelled macadamia nuts made from macadamia nuts grown in Malawi, and made in Malawi through drying, picking and other processing techniques for human consumption.
The macadamia nuts exported from Malawi to China shall not contain apple codling moth and nut tibia codling moth; they shall not contain live insects, insect eggs, soil, weed seeds, plant residues, metal foreign bodies and impurities such as gravel; the macadamia nuts exported to China shall be fumigated before exportation to ensure that there are no live insects, especially storage pests, in the nuts.
The raw material cultivation, production, processing, storage, transportation and export of macadamia nuts exported from Malawi to China shall comply with the relevant food safety and phytosanitary requirements of China and the Republic of Malawi, and shall not be contaminated by disease-causing microorganisms or poisonous and harmful substances. Macadamia nuts exported from Malawi to China shall be packaged in new, clean, hygienic and breathable materials that comply with food safety and phytosanitary requirements, and shall be prevented from spilling during transportation.
