Global cashew inventories are tightening, driving prices upward

According to German media outlet Mundus Agri, global cashew exports for the 2024/25 season increased by approximately 10% compared to the same period last year. While major buyers such as the EU, China, and the Middle East have ramped up imports, the U.S. market presents a different trend.

The Northern Hemisphere cashew season has now concluded. Data from Olam Food Ingredients (OFI), a leading global supplier of food and beverage ingredients, indicates that global cashew exports for the 2024/25 season increased by approximately 10% compared to the previous season. The majority of shipments were completed by the end of July, slightly alleviating raw material shortages faced by processors in Vietnam and India. OFI notes that processing volumes in Asia and Africa peaked during the third quarter, with exports expected to continue growing in the coming months as suppliers fulfill existing contracts. Increased procurement from major consumption regions like the EU, China, and the Middle East has tightened inventories. While the US also boosted purchases in the first two quarters, imports subsequently declined due to tariffs imposed by the Trump administration and market uncertainties.

Indian demand has similarly declined, though market experts anticipate a gradual recovery following the start of the festive season in September. Procurement intentions from China and Europe are expected to remain stable in the short term—a stronger euro is boosting transaction activity, with buyers meeting some demand while still seeking price advantages. However, U.S. demand is projected to contract further, as high retail prices are making consumers more cautious. Data from the Vietnam Cashew Association (Vinacas) shows that from January to July 2025, Vietnam exported 83,000 metric tons of cashews to the United States, valued at US$561 million, representing year-on-year declines of 27.5% and 11.7%, respectively. Although Vietnam still holds over 87% of the U.S. market share, its value share is declining. From January 1 to September 14, 2025, EU cashew imports increased by nearly 5% compared to the same period last year, with an average import price of €6.45 per kilogram—a full 20% higher than last year.
