On November 14, according to the U.S. FDA, one of the major U.S. food safety regulations, Codex Alimentarius (2013 version) was released. The major changes in the latest food code are as follows:
● Food stores and restaurants are required to provide posters with information on “food safety inspection” under the Codex Alimentarius, so that customers may have access to food safety information;
● For the first time, “non-typhoidal salmonella” is included in the list of bacterial pathogens, and pathogen-infected personnel will be prohibited to contact the food;
● Management requirements are set forth for “low-oxygenated inflatable” packaging and other new technologies;
● The requirements on minimum processing temperatures for some non-continuous processes and on the management of manual made RTE foods are adjusted; and
●The cleaning and disinfection requirements are strengthened on allergen-containing food processing equipment.
In addition, during the update of the 2013 version Codex Alimentarius, the opinions were also adopted from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. CDC of Ministry of Health, enterprises, institutions and other units.
The Codex Alimentarius is mainly applied for the food safety management in food stores, food and beverage industry, etc. Currently, 49 out of 50 States and 3 out of 6 Territories have adopted the Codex Alimentarius, which ensures food security to cover 96% of the U.S. population.
