Japan’s New Food Labeling Law will Take Effect on April 1 - Explanation Session is held in the Consumer Affairs Agency

On March 2, 2015, the explanation session was held in Japanese Consumer Affairs Agency in Tokyo. In the meeting, the new food labeling benchmark and new functional food labeling system is explained and it is announced that the new food labeling law will take effect on April 1, 2015.

In the New Food Labeling Law, the nutrition labeling becomes to compulsory from voluntary, and the nutrients including energy, protein, fat, carbohydrates and sodium shall be labeled. The sodium shall be labeled with equivalent salt.

After implementation of the New Food Labeling Law, labeling will be made and the transitional period will be set according to the new system. The transition period for the processed food and additive is 5 years and that for the fresh food is 1 year and 6 months.

The implementation date of the new functional food labeling system is not defined.
