On March 2, 2015, Consumer Affairs Agency of Japan held an explanation meeting in Tokyo to explain the new food labeling basic standard and labeling system for new functional food, and meanwhile clarify the new food labeling law would be implemented since April 1 this year.
The label of nutritional ingredients in new food labeling law becomes compulsive from voluntary. The nutritional ingredients to be labeled are energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate and sodium (sodium shall be labeled by salt equivalent).
After the implementation of new food labeling law, the food shall be labeled according to new system. A transitional period will be set. The transitional period of processing food and additives is five years and fresh food is one year and a half.
The implementation date of new functional food labeling system is unclear.
