April 7 is the “World Health Day” and this
year’s theme is “from farm to table, and everybody is responsible for food
safety”. WHO emphasizes that farmers, retailers, cooks and consumers should
take up their responsibility and launch “five essentials for food safety”
guidelines.
The “five essentials” of the guidelines are to keep clean,
separate raw and cooked food, ensure the food is cooked, keep food temperature
and use safe water and raw materials. WHO has also suggested that the root of
vegetables and fruits shall be thoroughly peeled off and leaf vegetables and
fruit shall be immersed with safe water.
WHO pointed out that unsafe food containing harmful bacteria,
viruses, parasites or chemical will cause diarrhea, cancer and more than 200
kinds of diseases. According to statistics, food-borne and waterborne
diarrhoeal diseases will lead to death of about 2 million people every year,
and many of them are children.
