Guinea-Bissau government sponsored 2015 Cashew Marketing Festival opening ceremony in the northern city of Santo Domingo. The theme of this marketing festival is “Zero Tolerance of Illegal Export of Cashew”. Bashiro Jia, acting prime minister of Guinea-Bissau, minister of Council of Ministers and Parliamentary Affairs, announced a series of measures to increase cashew exports on behalf of the government.
According to Bashiro Jia, Guinea-Bissau is the world’s fourth largest producer of cashew. To increase the export volume of cashew this year, the government will strengthen regulatory capacity of cashew exports. It has increased number of law enforcement vehicles, motorcycles and bicycles, while increasing monitoring equipment in the port of Guinea-Bissau. Once illegal export is found, there will be severe punishment. In the domestic area, Guinea-Bissau
Ministry of Trade and Handicraft will formulate policies to eliminate cashew trade barriers. Bashiro Jia condemned that according to Treasury Department announcement last year, at least 70,000 tons of cashews were illegally overland exported, resulting government financial loss of about $ 90 million. He said he expected exports to reach 20 million tons this year.
