The newest pecans variety of University of Georgia
will be released in the spring season this year. Avalon is the product
hybridized by two scab-resistant varieties with the quality improved
significantly after the hybridization. At present, this new variety has shown
the good scab-resistant capacity.
Large
Size, High Quality and High Disease-resistant Capacity
University of Georgia has applied for
the patent for Avalon. At present, four plantations in Georgia State
have obtained the sales license of this variety. Patrick Conner, the gardening
scientist in Tifton Campus of University of Georgia, said that what made this
variety special were its large size, high quality and very high scab-resistant
capacity.
Reduction
of Medicament Spraying and Cost Saving
The biggest
advantage of Avalon is that the planter can reduce the times of fungicide
spraying, thus significantly reducing the costs. The variety planted most
extensively in Georgia
State is Desirable. The
Desirable planter needs to spray the medicament for 12-20 times in each quarter
according to the rainfall. But it only needs to spray the medicament for
several times for Avalon yearly, thus the fungicide purchase expenditure can be
saved.
