According to the “Sun” of Nigeria on April 10, sesames are
extensively planted in north states of Nigeria, such as Jigawa, Carnot, Bauchi,
Borno due to strong drought tolerance. With no cholesterol and high nutritious
value, sesames are of commercial, consumable and medical value, and larger
international demand, and can create income from foreign exchange.
Currently, sesame is the most important export-oriented agricultural
products in Nigeria. From October to November 2016, the export volume reached
6.46 Billion Naira (about USD 20 Million), accounting for 39.4% of agricultural
product export.
However, the industrial potential of sesame in Nigeria is far from been dug out. In Africa, the largest export destinations of sesames are Ethiopia and Sudan. Expert estimates that sesame industry can bring foreign exchange income of USD 4.7 Billion to Nigeria.
