Israel Plans to Revise Regulations on Food Nutrition Label and Tag Marks

On April 12, 2017, Israel released G/TBT/N/ISR/946 Notification to release revision draft of public health regulations for food nutrition label protection. The following revisions are made:

1. Change the ranking sequence of nutrient elements in nutrition information table, energy, fat (saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol), Na, carbohydrate (sugar, sugar alcohol, starch, dietary fiber), protein, vitamin and mineral substances (Article 4 and 13);

2. Set minimum content of sugar as 2g/100g (100mL) (Article 4.(a).6);

3. Set minimum level of Na, sugar, saturated fatty acid; mark red in the front of package if exceeding the minimum level. This regulation will be implemented in three steps from Jan. 1, 2018 to Nov. 30, 2020; labels shall be marked by requirements of the third step after December 1, 2020 (Article 4, 5, 11, 19);

4. Provide specific instructions of red and green mark (Appendix 2 and 6);

5. Exemption circumstances of specific matters and packages (Article 3. (b), 3 (c) and 8).

The regulation will be implemented by steps. The appraisal deadline shall be May 15.
