In
2014, Chile walnuts are allowed to export to China for the first time, and in
2014, the walnut kernels are allowed to export to China in 2016. Moreover, due
to zero tariff, Chile walnuts have vast market advantages in China.
Most
importantly, the seasons in Chile are opposite to that in China. The harvest
season of walnuts in China is from January to December, while walnuts in Chile
are harvested in April when the Chinese walnuts are not mature yet. Chile
walnuts can supply to the Chinese market as supplementation. China is the world
largest walnut producing country, and meanwhile the world largest walnut
importer --- China annually imports about 100,000t, even larger than annual
output of walnuts in Chile (75,000t in 2016).
