As predicted by
United States Department of Agriculture, in 2016/17 harvest season (October -
September), US pecan output will reach 262.7 million pounds (unshelled),
increasing 3% than that in the previous season. It is known that improvement of
pecan varieties is the direct cause for output increase. The popularity of
improved varieties in USA has reached 91%.
The pecan output
in Georgia, New Mexico and Texas still rank top three in this season,
contributing to 81% of total pecan output in the US. Except New Mexico
(decreasing by 1% than that in the previous season) and Louisiana (decreasing
by 20% than the previous season), the pecan output in each state of USA will be
improved universally.
The increase of output in this season, large amount inventory in the previous season and large import volume in the beginning of the year make US market pecan supply in 2016/17 sufficient, which may leads to price decrease. The demand of international market for US pecans, particularly unshelled pecan is still powerful.
