FAO and WTO jointly released a
report of Trade and Food
Standards on July 12. The report said the global food trade value has
current reached USD1.7 trillion, and is growing rapidly. In order to get
profits from prosperously developing global trade, and usher in the incoming
technical reform, the country must speed up participation in formulating
international food trade standards.
The report briefly discussed how to formulate and apply international
food standards, and encouraged developing countries to invest to improve
capacity and skills so as to effectively participate in work of each
organization and multilateral agency, including Codex Alimentarius formulated
by WTO and other organizations.
The report said the core
institution formulating food standards is Codex Alimentarius Commission jointly
organized by FAO and WTO. Its 188 members cover 99% population of the world.
Since the foundation in 1963, CAC has issued various food standards, codes and
rules, covering nearly 200 food and 300 food additives, which regulate maximum
residual limit of 5000 pestcides.
