US Pecan Output Holds the Line, Chinese Purchase Quantity May Reduce 20 Mln Pound

US Department of Agriculture released the pecan output in the US. The number is expected to be 277.4 million (unshelled), holding the line with last year, and 3.2% up.

However, the data predicted by USDA only covers 8 of 15 pecan producing states. The output in other seven states is expected to be 10-20 million pounds, and actual crop yield is about 295 million pounds.

The predicted purchase amount of Chinese market in 2017 will reduce 20 million pounds because firstly Chinese buyers have purchased large amount of South Africa pecans, and secondly the Spring Festival is later than the previous year, and Chinese buyers can wait for more reasonable price.

Currently, the price of walnut nut is lower than pecan nut, which is $3/pound; the pecans are competing with walnuts in 60% distributing channels. Therefore, the pecan demand in US market will be weakened continuously as affected by high price.
