At the end of August, the NASS Northwest Regional Field Office published the latest 2017 US hazel yield prediction. According to the report, such yield was predicted to reach up to 33,000 tons (shelled), which was 18% less than the yield of 2016 on year-on-year basis but about 7% higher than the average yield of recent five years.

For the 2016/17 season (July 2016 ~ June 2017), the yield and import volume of the commodity hazelnut increased compared to the last season on year-on-year basis and there was abundant supply on the market without being influenced by the over low carry-over stock of the last season. Along with the stable supply, the average production price of the hazel in the 2016/17 season was USD2,976/ton in California, 4% less than that of the 2015/16 season on year–on-year basis.

The yield increase and production price decline of the hazel in the 2016/2017 season in US boosted greatly the market demand: The export volume and turn volume in the domestic US market increased by 31% and 26% respectively compared to the previous season on year-on-year basis. Although the hazel was in great demand, the EOS carry-over stock of the hazel in the 2016/17 season in US still ranked the second for recent ten seasons. In view of that it was widely expected in the industry that the total yield of the hazel in US would fall in the 2017/18 season, the huge carry-over stock in the 2016/17 season would guarantee the supply in the new season to a certain degree and restrain the rise of the hazel price in the new season in US to a certain extent.

According to the data published by China Customs, US was the largest exporter of the hazel (shelled) for China in 2016, exporting 525 tons of hazel to China in total with the export amount as about USD1,800,000; North Korea ranked the second with the export volume as 37 tons and export amount as USD33,000. Turkey was the largest hazelnut exporter for China in 2016. About 99.9% of the imported hazelnut was from Turkey. In that year, the volume of the hazelnut exported to China was about 2,923 tons with the export amount of about USD30930000.
