Pecan is the most important variety of nuts
in Mexico.
According to the pecan insider of such country, the total pecan yield in Mexico
might decline by 28% this year. The main reason for this was that the fruiting
rate of pecan tress declined overall due to the hot and dry weather in Mexico
in 2017. However, the fruits were very good in terms of the size, quality and
kernel rate precisely because of the yield reduction of each pecan tree. In
addition, the harvesting was easy and the bud rate was reduced greatly due to
the dry weather.
For the previous
production season, the planting area of the pecan in Mexico was about 112,000
hectares; the harvesting area was about 81,000 hectares; the yield reached up
to 1.7 tons per hectare; the total yield was about 138,000 tons. In recent ten
years, the pecan yield in Mexico
increased constantly. The total yield in 2016 doubled compared to that of ten
years ago. In 2016, the export amount of the shelled pecan in Mexico reached up to USD2,550,000
with the year-on-year growth rate of 74%; the export amount of the unshelled
pecan reached up to USD3,680,000 with the year-on-year growth rate of 22%. The
shelled and unshelled pecans in Mexico were mainly exported to U.S.A. with the
export amount of up to USD1,890,000 and USD3,650,000. The amounts of Mexican
shelled pecans imported by China
and Vietnam
were USD410,000 and USD250,000 respectively, ranked the second and the third
respectively. Since 2014, China
has lowered the pecan tariff from 25% to 10% and maintained such tariff to this
day.
