In the current month, the upward adjustment of per unit yield data made the final sunflower seed yield in 2017/18 was upward adjusted to 2.2 billion pounds, which is 359 million pounds higher than the predicted value of the previous month. Even so, the sunflower seed yield in 2017/18 was still 18% less than that of the previous year, the lowest since 2006/07. The yield of the sunflower seed for oil manufacturing was 1.857 billion pounds, 22% less, accounting for the entire drop rate. By contrast, the per unit yield was improved, which shored up the yield of the sunflower seed not for oil manufacturing to increase for 10%, reaching up to 312 million pounds. The drought weather of North Dakota and South Dakota in the early summer caused the nationwide average per unit yield dropped from 1,731 pounds/acre of the previous year to 1,613 pounds/acre. The nationwide sunflower sowing area was 1.40 million acres, 12% less. However, the ending inventory hit a new high for the past 11 years, mitigating the influences of the yield on the supply. The growth rate of the sunflower seed needs in 2017/18 may be very small, thus the supply drop may mainly cause the tight ending inventory.
