Latest report released by USDA shows the 2018/19 global walnut output is expected to be 2 million ton (unshelled), 2% lower on year-on-year basis as affected by the declined yield in China. The global walnut export is mainly from USA, which is expected to be 727,000t, 4% up year on year. The global walnut inventory will usher in the highest record in 2018/19 season, and may reach 149,000t with increase of 27%.

China

In 2018/19 season, the walnut yield in China may reach 850,000t, decreasing 15% year on year. Yunnan Province, which is the largest walnut output province in China, suffered frost disaster seriously, and the yield in this season will rise slowly. The snow in April seriously affected harvest in northern yield provinces such as Shaanxi, Shanxi, Henan, Hebei and Gansu. The yield may be 30-80% lower. It is gratifying that the walnut quality in those provinces is not affected obviously. With full nuts, the overall level is still optimistic. As the second largest walnut producing area in China, the yield in Xinjiang will hold the line as that in the previous season.

USA

Since the pressure of insect damage is eased, the walnut yield in 2018/19 season in USA will increase 10%, reaching 626,000t. The local consumption will soar and reach the new historical record of 201,000t, increasing 17% year on year.

The large export volume to EU will make up the declination of China-oriented export. The predicted export volume will fluctuate little compared to that in the previous season, and reach 410,000t. The inventory will reach a new high record in 2018/19 season, soaring 56% to 90,000t.

EU

The walnut yield in France will be recovered from the cold wave suffered in the previous season. The yield in Spain and Romania will largely hold a line with that in the previous season. The overall yield in EU will be expected to grow 7%, reaching 130,000t.

During the Christmas every year, EU will usher in peak consumption of walnuts. In the meantime, in recent years, the annual walnut consumption in EU is rising ceaselessly under stimulation of the vast demands in the catering and baking industry.

Ukraine

Benefiting from ceaseless expansion of growing area, the walnut yield in Ukraine will rise up to 127,000t in the 2018/19 season, increasing 17% year on year. In the past, Russia was once the largest overseas market of the Ukraine walnuts. At present, the export mainly orients at EU and China.

Chile

Good harvest of Chile walnut will be coming in 2018/19 season, and the yield growth is nearly 23%, reaching up to 120,000t. Most of walnuts in Chile are exported. With the increase in yield, the export volume in 2018/19 season will rise correspondingly.

Turkey

The walnuts in Turkey were impacted seriously by drought in the previous season, and will be recovered this season. The predicted yield will be 63,000t, 9% up.

Walnut consumption is concentrated on traditional desserts in Turkey, such as Baklava, halva, ice cream, cookies and cakes. The healthy food trend in recent years also pushes overall demand of nuts.

The prediction shows in 2018/19 season, Turkey will import 78,000t walnuts from USA and Uzbekistan.
