The one million filberts grown in
the southern farms of New South Wales are expected to fruit about 5000t
unshelled hazel nuts before 2020, which will be supplied for chocolate paste of
Nutella and Ferrero Rocher.
It is said that the one million
filberts will be planted in the land near Narrandera in Riverina
next week, and the land is owned by Ferreo. Those filberts will greatly improve
yield of Australian hazel nuts. The current yield of Australian hazel nuts is about
170t, and imported hazels are relied on.
Ferreo provides a subsidy of 70 Million to the farm and 54 job opportunities are created. Claudio Cavallini, the General Manager of Agri Australis, said once hazel nuts are harvested, the quality will be evaluated. It will depend whether they will be applied to candy and ice cream products such as Nutella and Ferrero Rocher or released in fresh market. Meanwhile, the farm, covering an area of 2600ha. is a demonstrative farm of the Company, and it is used to test two hazel varieties and find the variety mostly suitable to Riverina area.
