Mainstream media of Tanzania, The Guardian, The Citizen
and Daily News reported on Nov. 10 that the Tanzanian Government has released
an ultimatum for four days to all cashew nut dealers in the country, and required
them to submit written report about cashew nut purchase quantity from farmers.
Otherwise, they can be deregistered.
At least 35 cashew nut buyers showed their interests of
purchase but said they are restricted by the minimum price set by the
government. The traders wish to purchase at the price of 1700-2500Tanzania
shilling per kilogram. However, the farmers rejected because the price in the
previous season is 4000 Tanzania shilling per kilogram and the government made
a promise for higher return. A few weeks ago, President Magufuli told dealers
in a meeting that they should purchase cashew nuts at the price of no lower
than 3000 Tanzania shilling per kilogram, and said the lower price may exploit
farmers. However, traders believe they may suffer huge losses if they purchase cashew
nuts at the price set by the government because the current cashew nut price is
about 2500 Tanzania shilling in global market.
Premier Majaliwa said the other day that all registered cashew nut dealers shall submit correspondences to his office before 12th of the month to describe the planned tonnage from farmers and days required. Otherwise, they can be deregistered and forbidden to participate in cashew nut auction. The premier wishes dealers who want to continuously buy cashew nuts could be finished in four days.
