Mexicos Financier reported on May 6 that, according to statistics from the Mexican Agricultural
Market Production Group, Mexicos corn imports totaled 3.412 million cubic tons
in Q1 of
this year, up 12% year-on-year, while soybean imports reached
1.907 million cubic tons, up 21.5% year-on-year, a
record high. The Group believes that, the main reasons for this situation are:
On the one hand, the market supply exceeds demand; on the other hand, the
outbreak of the African swine fever in China has led to a sharp drop in corn
and soybean prices. Juan Carlos, Chairman of the Group, pointed out that, the
South American region had a good harvest of corn and soybean production this
year, and the market was well stocked. Chinas pig production due to the swine
fever epidemic has decreased by 30%, thus resulting in a significant decrease in a
demand for the afore-said the products. However, at the same time, the Mexican
pig production is increasing and the demand on the feed is naturally
increasing.
