On June 3, 2019, the European Union Food Safety Administration (EFSA) released a message that it would revise the maximum residue limit of benzothiadiazole-S-methyl in hazelnuts.

Pursuant to the Article 6 of regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the applicant Syngenta France SAS submitted an application to the French national competent authority to revise the maximum residue limit of benzothiadiazole in hazelnuts. The application was then transferred to the EU Food Safety Administration. After evaluation, the EU Food Safety Administration as concluded that, the short-term and long-term intake of benzothiazole residues is unlikely to pose a risk to consumers health, and suggested to relax the existing maximum residue of benzothiazole in hazelnuts from 0.1mg/kg to 0.2mg/kg.
