As reported by the Guardian, the mainstream media in Tanzania on Aug. 24, recently, growers in main cashew nuts planting area felt worry that next harvesting season would be the worst one since the government delayed to pay procurement fund for cashew nuts last year. They said the government did not allow them to sell cashew nuts to individuals and announced to purchase all cashew nuts; it totally purchased about 220,000t the entire year; however, the government offered a lower price in cashew nut auction and still failed to pay a large sum; farmers complained they could not afford pesticide and had to apply pesticides twice to fruit trees instead of five.
About tax collection for cashew nut trade, Mr. Chimae,
the senator of main growing area Newala said since the government planned to purchase
cashew nuts worth of 400 million Tanzania shilling while at present it has paid
over 500 Tanzania shilling to farmers. Thus in the previous harvest season, the
decision made by government on comprehensive procurement of cashew nuts from
growers would not affect tax collection on cashew nut; therefore, the parliament
in the district decided to lower 20 shillings per kg cashew nuts.
