Recently,
pecans growers in the south of USA started paying close attention to irrigation
situations because at that time pecans need more water contents, bigger fruits
and may physiologically drop.
In
Southeast, pecans grow in a favorable condition and may usher in great harvest.
Although physiological drop may occur in July and August, so far, pecan nuts on
trees are still in a favorable condition. Pecan trees in southeast are still
recovering from damage caused by hurricane in the year before last. Growers in
that region expect pecan yield this year could recover to the level before the
hurricane.
The
situation of pecans in southwest is a mixed blessing. However, it shows a
optimistic prospect as a whole. In general, the overall situations in the west
are favorable. More seedlings are put into growing. The income in New Mexico
will increase again. The pecans planting area in California is increasing and
the yield in next years is expected to rise.
There
is about 4 months’ growing period for US pecans. After that, pecans in the
southeast will enter harvest, toward the west gradually. Most growers this year
keep optimistic for quality of pecan nuts.
