In
the past ten years, the demand for US pecans was rising, and most of which is
from increase of export. However, since the trade disputes between China and
USA burst out, the US pecan export volume to China is reduced to the minimum in
the past ten years.
The
export of US pecans to the Chinese market is not totally pessimistic. As the
trade agreement in the first stage is negotiated and concluded, China is
expects to enlarge purchase of US agricultural products. On Feb. 14, 2020, the
first stage trade agreement came into force, and on Feb. 17, 2020, China
exempted customs duty for 696 varieties of US commodities, including 150 kinds
of agricultural products.
The
US pecans export to Asia increased 47% while China is the largest driving force
of the growth source. Compared to the same period of the last season, the
export of US pecans to China is increased 369%. In the previous season, from
September 2018 to May 2019, US exported 34,900 pounds pecans to China. While in
the same period this year, US exported 163,800 pounds pecans.
With
China’s commitment on purchasing US agricultural products worth of USD 40-50
billion, US pecan growers placed great expectations on the Chinese market. They
wish the shipping amount of pecans toward China could grow to the level before
the trade war, and continue to expand the market.
