Tanzanian government plans to increase its annual production of cashews from 315,000 tonnes to at least one million tonnes by 2025, the Guardian, a mainstream media of Tanzania, reported on October 8. According to the report, the plan involves increasing the planting area of cashews and encourage collective planting, to improve the competitiveness of Tanzania among the cashew producers such as India, Vietnam, Brazil and Cote d'Ivoire.
Tanzania was the first country in Africa to develop and grow hybrid cashews, and between 2006 and 2015, Tanzania developed 54 different high-quality varieties that improved cashew farmers' yields. According to the report, if the cashew farmers could plant high-quality cashews and use advanced management techniques, Tanzania is expected the leading country in producing cashews in Africa. In addition, Tanzania has exported cashew nut seedlings to Ghana, Zambia and Mozambique, and exported more than 50 tons of seedlings to Zambia in 2018.
