TARI said cashew nut yield in Tanzania is expected to triple, reaching 1 million ton as driven by new variety development. TARI developed 54 new disease-resistant and high-yield cashew nut varieties, which show vast potential in new planting area. Every tree of new variety may produce 20kg cashew nuts, while the yield of traditional cashew tree is only 11kg. TARI take cashew nuts as one of the strategic crops. It wishes 17 planting areas in the country could adopt better plantation method to promote high-quality varieties, and improve annual yield of Tanzanian cashew nuts from 313,000t to 1 million ton.
